British Food

British food traditionally doesn't get a good reputation around the globe.  In fact, most non-Brits are confused as to what is exactly British cuisine.   What comes to mind to most people is likely to be Fish & Chips or Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding.  British food has been influenced by other cultures and styles of those who have settle in Britain and the most popular national dish today seems to be the 'curry'!
Here is a collection of some well-known traditional British dishes.  If you are a keen cook, just click on the recipe link  and start cooking!

Fish & Chips
Originated in the UK in the 1850's or 1860's.  This popular take-away food consists of fish (cod, haddock or plaice) deep-fried in batter with deep-fried chips (slab-cut potatoes).  Most Brits eat Fish and Chips with salt and vinegar as seasoning.

Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding
This is basically beef roasted in the oven and traditionally it is served at Sunday dinner.  This is usually served with gravy and Yorkshire Pudding (originated from Yorkshire, England and is made with batter and then baked). Recipe here

Apple Crumble
Crumbles originated in Britain during World War II. Due to strict rationing the ingredients required to make the bases of pies contained too much of the necessary flour, fat and sugar to make the pastry. So a simple mixture of flour, margarine and sugar was used to make the top of the crumble.

Apple Crumble is best served with cream, vanilla ice-cream or custard depending on your preference. Recipe here
